2 Euro Commemorative Coin Andorra 2017 100th Anniversary of the National Anthem of Andorra This commemorative coin marks one hundred years since Andorra’s General Council formally made “El gran Carlemany” the country’s national anthem. The hymn had been written in 1914: the episcopal co-prince Joan Benlloch y Vivó supplied the words, while the priest Enric Marfany Bons composed the music. It was first performed that year at the celebration of Meritxell, initially without official status. On 2 April 1917, the Consell General adopted it as an official national emblem. The first official performance nevertheless took place later, on 8 September 1921, during the Meritxell feast. The coin depicts part of the score, including the opening notes, floral ornamentation and the Catalan inscription “Himne Andorrà”. Twelve stars surround the design.
