2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2013 125th Anniversary of the birth of Nobel Prize winning author Frans Eemil Sillanpää The Finnish 2 euro commemorative coin honours the 125th birthday of writer Frans Eemil Sillanpää (1888–1964), who in 1939 became the first Finnish author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Foundation praised his profound understanding of the Finnish rural population and his artful depiction of their lives and relationship with nature. The European Central Bank also notes his popular radio appearances and Christmas broadcasts, through which he acquired the nickname “Taata,” roughly the nation’s grandfather, in postwar Finland. The inner field shows a stylised portrait with F. E. SILLANPÄÄ in a semicircle above; left are 1888 and the mint mark, right 1964, FI and the issue year 2013. The outer ring bears the twelve EU stars; designers are Reijo Paavilainen and Pekka Rytkönen.
