2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2004 5th Enlargement of the European Union Finland's commemorative piece marks the accession of ten countries on 1 May: Cyprus, Malta, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. The expansion of the community from 15 to 25 members was widely read as a milestone in overcoming the Cold War–era division of Europe. The coin's design centers on a stylized pillar whose upper end gives rise to new shoots or leaves; the column signifies a shared foundation while the upward growth embodies enlargement and continuing development of the Union. The sculptor Pertti Mäkinen is credited for the motif; the pair of letter M’s also allude to designer and Mint Director Raimo Makkonen.
