2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2015 150th Anniversary of the birth of Akseli Gallen-Kallela The 2-euro commemorative coin honors painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931), a formative figure in Finnish art whose work brought nature, folklore and epic themes into national imagery. The design borrows the Swan of Tuonela from the Kalevala: the swan floats above the horizon, while water stirred by a descending spirit is shown beneath. A painter’s palette is included in the composition, bearing the dates 1865 and 2015; the Finnish country code FI and the mintmark also appear. The name AKSELI GALLEN KALLELA encircles the outer ring among the twelve EU stars. Hannu Veijalainen is credited as the designer, and the issue had a planned mintage of 500,000.
