2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2016 100th Anniversary of the birth of philosopher Georg Henrik von Wright The Finnish €2 commemorative coin marks the 100th birthday of philosopher Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003), born in Helsinki and internationally known for work in logic, the philosophy of science, action theory and the analytic tradition. He taught at the University of Helsinki, was appointed in 1948 to the University of Cambridge as Ludwig Wittgenstein’s successor and returned to Helsinki in 1951. The design links the shaft of a Doric column with an oak branch: the column alludes to von Wright’s early enthusiasm for classical antiquity, while the oak stands for strength and wisdom. Nora Tapper is named as designer; the national side bears a name/signature, the FI mark, the mintmark and the date 2016.
