2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2018 Finnish Sauna Culture The design recognizes a longstanding cultural practice in which the sauna functions beyond hygiene as a place for quiet, social exchange and a bond with nature. Central to that tradition is löyly, the steam produced when water is poured onto heated stones; the custom is passed on through families, clubs and educational settings. Erkki Vainio depicted a lakeside scene with a characteristic sauna, and the coin’s edge carries the country code “FI”, the mint mark, the issue year inscription and the ring of twelve stars to situate the motif within a national and European frame. UNESCO’s 2020 listing later brought international recognition but was not the reason for the coin’s issue.
