2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2021 100th Anniversary of Autonomy of the Aland region The coin commemorates the 1921 Åland settlement brought about by the League of Nations, under which Finland was granted sovereignty over the islands while being obliged to protect the Swedish language and culture, local customs and the islanders’ self-government. That arrangement settled the dispute with Sweden over national affiliation and reaffirmed the demilitarized status already in place since 1856, while Åland was neutralized. The motif depicts an abstract archipelago: a sea lane with nautical marks, the bow of a boat and a hand with a compass at the lower register, a horizon in the centre and sky with clouds above. The bilingual inscriptions name the 100th anniversary of Åland self-government in Finnish and Swedish.
