2 Euro Commemorative Coin France 2013 150th Anniversary of the birth of Pierre de Coubertin Pierre de Coubertin, born in 1863, promoted education through sport and is regarded as the driving force behind the modern Olympic Games. In 1894 he helped establish the International Olympic Committee, and the first modern Games followed in Athens two years later. The coin issued for his 150th birthday honours his belief that sporting competition could encourage international encounter. It links France’s contribution to the Olympic movement with ideals of fairness, education and mutual understanding.
