2 Euro Commemorative Coin France 2018 Simone Veil Simone Veil survived deportation to Auschwitz as a young woman and later became one of France’s most influential political figures. As health minister, she secured the legalisation of abortion in 1975; in 1979, she became the first President of the directly elected European Parliament. The coin honours her commitment to human dignity, women’s rights and Europe. Its design combines her portrait with biographical symbols, showing how an experience of persecution was transformed into lasting political engagement.
