2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2017 Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Porta Nigra (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2017 for Rhineland-Palatinate, this €2 commemorative coin continues Germany’s Federal States series, begun in 2006. Its national side features the Porta Nigra in Trier, the most important surviving Roman city gate north of the Alps. Hamburg artist Frantisek Chochola chose a characteristic exterior view that makes the monument’s imposing dark-stone architecture immediately recognizable. The coin recalls Trier’s Roman past while also representing the cultural variety of the modern federal state. As the twelfth issue in the series, it also serves the programme’s wider purpose: making Germany’s federal structure visible through distinctive regional landmarks.
