Born in Hamburg in 1918, Schmidt served as Federal Chancellor from 1974 to 1982 and became known for pragmatic crisis management and a strong commitment to European cooperation. Designer Bodo Broschat chose a lively, finely modelled image rather than a rigid ceremonial portrait: Schmidt appears in a characteristic posture, engaged in dialogue with another person.
