2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2020 2500th Anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae Greece’s 2020 €2 commemorative coin marks the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. In 480 BCE, during the Greco-Persian Wars, an alliance of Greek city-states attempted to stop the southward advance of King Xerxes I’s Persian army at a narrow mountain pass. Spartan king Leonidas commanded the defending force, whose position and heavily armed infantry reduced the advantage of Persian numbers for a time. After three days, a local guide revealed a route around the pass, making the Greek position untenable. Leonidas and the remaining defenders, including 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians, died in the final stand. Their defeat became a lasting emblem of courage and sacrifice.
