2 Euro Commemorative Coin Ireland 2015 30th Anniversary of the EU Flag In 2015, Ireland joined the common issue marking the 30th anniversary of the European Communities’ adoption of the European flag. The flag with twelve stars had already been adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955 and became the emblem of the Communities in 1985. Georgios Stamatopoulos transformed the stars in the coin design into human figures gathered around the flag. The motif thus presents the European idea not as an abstract emblem, but as a link between people and cultures. “éire” and the years 1985–2015 appear beside the flag, while the twelve stars of the outer ring repeat the theme.
