2 Euro Commemorative Coin Ireland 2016 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising This first exclusively Irish 2 euro commemorative coin recalls the Easter Rising of 1916, a decisive event on Ireland’s path to independence. At its centre stands Hibernia, the allegorical representation of Ireland, shown as a statue on the roof of Dublin’s General Post Office. The building served as a headquarters of the insurgents, and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read there. The handwritten-looking word “Hibernia” draws stylistic inspiration from the Book of Kells, while the rays behind the figure suggest renewal and the emergence of a new state. Emmet Mullins designed the coin, linking the years 1916 and 2016.
