2 Euro Commemorative Coin Ireland 2019 100th Anniversary of the first Meeting of Dail Eireann The coin commemorates the first sitting of Dáil Éireann on 21 January 1919 at Dublin’s Mansion House. The elected Sinn Féin representatives did not take their seats in the British House of Commons; instead, they assembled as an Irish parliament. At that meeting, an independence declaration was read and foundations for a separate parliamentary order were set out. Emmet Mullins chose the Round Room of the Mansion House as the scene for the coin. The Irish inscription “An Chéad Dáil” means “The First Dáil” and refers directly to that constituent gathering. The design therefore honours a defining moment in modern Irish democracy.
