2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2013 200th Anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi Italy’s 2013 two-euro commemorative coin marks the bicentenary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth in 1813. Verdi, who lived from 1813 to 1901, became one of the defining opera composers of the nineteenth century. He was born in Roncole near Busseto, in Emilia, and retained a lasting attachment to the region, where several places connected with his life are preserved today. Operas such as Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata made his music internationally influential, while his career unfolded during the cultural and political era of the Italian Risorgimento. The coin presents a three-quarter bust portrait of Verdi. His birth year and the 2013 issue year flank the image, accompanied by Italy’s republican monogram and Rome mint mark; the lower field carries his name and the designer’s initials.
