2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2019 500th Anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci Italy’s 2019 two-euro commemorative coin marks the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death in 1519. Leonardo was a defining Renaissance figure because he treated painting, close study of nature, scientific inquiry, and mechanical invention as connected pursuits. The design shows a detail from the Lady with an Ermine, his Milanese portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, a lady-in-waiting and companion of Ludovico Sforza’s court. The sitter’s turned, three-quarter pose gives the image unusual movement and presence, qualities associated with Leonardo’s innovative approach to portraiture. The inscription LEONARDO, the dates 1519–2019, and the mint mark R accompany the image, while twelve stars encircling the outer ring identify the European context of the coin. It entered circulation in Italy in June 2019.
