2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2022 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program Italy’s 2022 €2 commemorative coin marks 35 years of Erasmus, the European programme created in 1987 to encourage cross-border exchange among universities and higher-education institutions. What began as a higher-education initiative gradually became Erasmus+, a wider European Union framework covering education, vocational training, youth and sport. The name carries a double reference: it abbreviates the original programme title while honouring Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Renaissance scholar whose travels between European centres of learning embody the project’s intellectual ideal. The design translates that history into a compact visual narrative. A portrait of Erasmus appears on the right, while a flowing network of rays crosses the centre and forms the number 35, suggesting mobility, cooperation and the many human connections created through the programme. Italy’s version adds “1987–2022”, the national monogram RI and mint mark R.
