2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2024 Montalcini Italy’s 2024 commemorative two-euro coin honours Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909–2012), the Turin-born neurobiologist whose work shaped twentieth-century biomedical science. Her academic career was disrupted by Fascist Italy’s 1938 racial laws, which excluded Jews from professional and university life. She nevertheless continued investigating embryonic nerve development in a makeshift home laboratory, later pursuing research in the United States. With Stanley Cohen, she identified nerve growth factor, or NGF, a discovery that earned them the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Levi-Montalcini remained active as a researcher, mentor and founder of scientific institutions, and in 2001 became an Italian senator for life. The coin places her portrait before a microscope, recalling both her laboratory practice and a medal designed by her brother Gino.
