2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2009 200th Anniversary of Louis Brailles birth Italy’s 2009 €2 commemorative coin marks the bicentenary of Louis Braille’s birth. Born in Coupvray, near Paris, on 4 January 1809, Braille lost his sight after a childhood accident. At the Paris school for blind young people, he adapted an earlier system of raised dots into a compact tactile code. Between the ages of twelve and sixteen, he created an alphabet that could also represent punctuation and numbers, later extending it to musical notation. Although adoption was gradual, the system ultimately gave blind and visually impaired people a practical route to reading, writing, education, and wider participation in knowledge. The coin depicts a hand reading across book pages and two flying gulls, symbols of unrestricted, universal knowledge. “Louis Braille” is additionally rendered in raised-dot Braille.
