2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2019 100th Anniversary of the Accession to the throne of Grand Duchess Charlotte This 2019 issue marks the centenary of Grand Duchess Charlotte’s accession. She acceded to the throne on 14 January 1919, aged 23, following the abdication of her sister, Marie‑Adélaïde. A referendum later that year confirmed popular support for the monarchy and strengthened the legitimacy of her reign. Charlotte ruled for more than 45 years, ranking among the longest‑serving and most influential figures of Luxembourg’s ruling house. The design juxtaposes two portraits: Grand Duke Henri on the left and Grand Duchess Charlotte on the right. Above arcs the French legend “Centenaire de l’accession au trône de la Grande‑Duchesse Charlotte”; below appear “LUXEMBOURG” and “2019”. Designer Herbert Wähner is credited, and the outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
