2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2022 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program Issued on 1 July 2022 as part of the euro-area joint issue, Luxembourg’s coin marks 35 years of the EU’s Erasmus programme, launched in 1987 to foster university cooperation and cross-border student mobility. The name honours Erasmus of Rotterdam, a widely travelled Renaissance scholar, and the programme’s original title, the “European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students”. The design sets his portrait to the right above an interlaced network that spans the centre and shapes the numeral 35, a metaphor for intellectual and human exchange and European collaboration. The piece bears “1987–2022”, “ERASMUS PROGRAMME” and “LËTZEBUERG”. Designer: Joaquin Jimenez; Grand Duke Henri’s monogram and variant mint and artist marks also appear. The European Commission calls Erasmus+ an emblematic European success story.
