2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2009 Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Charlotte, 90th Anniversary of Charlotte's Accession to the Throne This issue marks ninety years since Charlotte ascended the throne on 14 January 1919, succeeding her sister Marie Adelheid at the age of 23; she reigned until 12 November 1964. The official biography of the Grand Ducal Court places her accession amid the domestic tensions of the immediate post–World War I period and highlights the 1919 referendum, which confirmed popular allegiance to the monarchy. At the coin’s center appear left-facing, three-quarter-profile portraits of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Grand Duke Henri, with LËTZEBUERG and the year 2009 to the right. The design is credited to the team of the Banque centrale du Luxembourg; the outer ring carries twelve stars of the European Council and the Dutch mint marks for the mint and the mintmaster.
