2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2024 175th Anniversary of the death of Grand Duke William II - Relief Version This coin marks the 175th anniversary of William II’s death. He was Grand Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands from 7 October 1840 until his death on 17 March 1849; William III succeeded him. The design shows a left-facing portrait of Grand Duke Henri at right and an equestrian figure of William II at left. Legend: “GROUSSHEZOGE VU LËTZEBUERG – GUILLAUME II 1792–1849”; date 2024 and numeral 175 appear. In 1848 he assented to a constitution that limited royal power in favour of a representative assembly, described by the City of Luxembourg as the Grand Duchy’s first parliamentary constitution and among the most liberal of its time. Design by Chiara Principe; Chief Engraver Joaquin Jimenez. French strikes carry mintmark and engraver’s mark.
