2 Euro Commemorative Coin Netherlands 2013 Change of Throne Announcement, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Beatrix This issue anticipates the generational change announced within the Dutch royal family in January 2013. Queen Beatrix made public her intention to abdicate, and her son Willem-Alexander succeeded to the throne in April that year. Pannos Goutzemisis layered their portraits so that the transition is seen rather than merely stated in an inscription. Released on 7 February 2013, the coin prominently carries the date 28 January.
