2 Euro Commemorative Coin Portugal 2014 40th Anniversary of the 25th April Revolution The coin commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, when a military coup toppled Portugal’s dictatorship and paved the way to democracy and decolonization. It is known as the Carnation Revolution because civilians placed carnations in soldiers’ rifle barrels; the events were largely peaceful. The design features a stylized carnation formed by two curved lines, the inscriptions “25 DE ABRIL”, “40 ANOS” and “2014”, Portugal’s coat of arms and the designer’s signature José Teixeira.
