2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2014 500th Anniversary of the death of Donato Bramante This commemorative issue marks five centuries since the death of Donato Bramante, who died in Rome in 1514. The Italian architect and painter was a significant forerunner of High Renaissance architecture. His career reflects the close relationship between painting and building design that characterized the period. Bramante played an especially important role in the architectural renewal of Rome, helping to establish an approach shaped by balance, coherence and a renewed engagement with forms and ideas drawn from classical antiquity. The coin pairs a portrait of Bramante with the Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio. Built around 1502, this structure is among his principal Roman works and gives the design a direct architectural reference. The dates 1514 and 2014 clearly identify the historical anniversary commemorated by the issue.
