2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2016 550th Anniversary of the death of Donatello San Marino’s 2016 commemorative coin marks 550 years since the death of Donatello, born in Florence around 1386 and deceased there in 1466. Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi was one of the defining sculptors of the early Renaissance. His work helped renew European sculpture and reflects the period’s growing interest in the human figure, classical models, and expressive realism. The design features, in the left foreground, the head of David taken from Donatello’s bronze statue, created for the Medici around 1440. The inscription “1466–2016” identifies the commemorative occasion. The coin entered circulation on 5 April 2016, linking the Renaissance master’s artistic legacy with a precisely dated anniversary.
