2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2007 200th Anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi San Marino dedicated this commemorative coin to the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s birth. Born in Nice on 4 July 1807, Garibaldi became an Italian patriot and soldier of the Risorgimento. His campaigns helped advance the movement for Italian unification, making him a defining figure of nineteenth-century Italian history. The coin therefore recalls both his personal legacy and the broader political transformation with which his name is associated. A portrait of Garibaldi occupies the coin’s inner section. The inscription “SAN MARINO” appears on the left, while the year 2007 is placed on the right, accompanied by the mint mark R and the artist’s initials E.L.F. The subject also has a direct connection with the republic: Garibaldi stayed in San Marino in 1849 while retreating after the defence of Rome. The design thus unites commemorative date, portrait and documented Sammarinese link.
