2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2017 750th Anniversary of the birth of Giotto San Marino’s 2017 commemorative issue marks the 750th anniversary of Giotto di Bondone’s birth, traditionally placed in 1267. The Italian painter and architect of the late Middle Ages played a formative role in the history of Western art. His move toward more natural representation and a convincing sense of space helped point European painting in a new direction. The design brings together architecture and portraiture. On the left is part of the bell tower Giotto designed for Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence; on the right is a section of his likeness. The inscriptions “SAN MARINO,” “GIOTTO,” and “1267–2017” identify the artist and commemorative occasion, while the initials of designer Luciana De Simoni complete the composition.
