2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2019 500th Anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci This commemorative issue marks the five-hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death in 1519. Leonardo remains one of the defining figures of the Italian Renaissance, remembered not only as an artist but also as a scholar whose interests extended across observation, inquiry and the study of nature. His legacy reflects the unusually close relationship between artistic practice and intellectual investigation characteristic of the period. The coin features an angel painted by Leonardo for The Baptism of Christ, a work associated with Andrea del Verrocchio and Leonardo. The composition also includes the dates 1519 and 2019 and the name San Marino. The painting is preserved today in Florence’s Uffizi Galleries, where Leonardo’s contribution to the work is documented.
