2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2022 200th Anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova This issue honours Antonio Canova, one of the defining sculptors of Italian Neoclassicism. Born in Possagno in 1757, Canova established his reputation in Rome and died in 1822. His work repeatedly drew on the visual language of classical antiquity, helping to shape an artistic culture that valued its forms and ideals. The coin therefore commemorates both an individual artist and the enduring influence of the classical tradition on European art. The central image presents Hebe, the youthful goddess of Greek mythology, based on a sculpture by Canova. The model represented is held by the art gallery of the civic San Domenico Museum in Forlì. The design is completed by the inscriptions “CANOVA” and “SAN MARINO”, together with the years 1822 and 2022.
