2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2023 500th Anniversary of the death of Luca Signorelli This issue marks five centuries since the death of Luca Signorelli, who died in 1523. The Italian Renaissance painter is particularly associated with the monumental fresco cycle in the Cappella di San Brizio at Orvieto Cathedral. His work there represents an important achievement of Renaissance art and provides the historical focus for San Marino’s commemorative coin. At the centre of the design is an angel taken from Signorelli’s fresco “Il Paradiso”. The dates 1523 and 2023 identify both the year of the artist’s death and the anniversary being observed. By selecting this figure, the coin links remembrance of Signorelli with a representative detail from his celebrated artistic contribution at Orvieto.
