2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2025 550th Anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo This issue marks the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s birth, honouring a defining figure of the Italian High Renaissance. Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese, then part of the Republic of Florence, and died in Rome on 18 February 1564. His achievements made him one of the most influential artists in European cultural history, with a legacy that extends far beyond his own lifetime. The coin features his drawing Cleopatra. Michelangelo produced the work in 1535, using black pencil on paper as a gift for his friend Tommaso de’ Cavalieri. Now held at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, the drawing gives the commemorative design a direct connection with Michelangelo’s graphic art. The obverse was designed by Silvia Petrassi.
