2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2016 25th Anniversary of Independence of Slovenia €2 Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2016 25th Anniversary of Slovenia’s Independence This coin marks Slovenia’s transition from a constituent republic of Yugoslavia to an independent state. Following the first democratic elections on 8 April 1990, a nationwide referendum held on 23 December recorded support for independence from 88.5% of eligible voters. On 25 June 1991, the Slovenian parliament adopted the Basic Constitutional Charter on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia together with the declaration of independence. Yugoslav federal forces responded with a ten-day armed conflict, brought to an end by the 7 July ceasefire and the Brioni Agreement. The 2016 issue therefore commemorates both popular sovereignty and statehood.
