2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2019 The old town of Avila - UNESCO World Heritage Sites In 2019 the FNMT issued the tenth Spanish 2-euro commemorative coin devoted to the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Centre of Ávila and its Churches outside the Walls,” part of a series on Spain’s World Heritage that began in 2010. The coin’s design presents a close-up of Ávila’s formidable city wall, built in the 11th century to defend Castilian territory against the Moors and still giving the town its austere medieval character. The inscribed site comprises the walled old town and originally four Romanesque churches beyond the ramparts: San Segundo, San Andrés, San Vicente and San Pedro. The wall traces an almost-rectangular circuit of 2,516 metres; UNESCO records nine gates and 87 semicircular towers, though a briefer entry lists 82.
