2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2011 Alhambra in Granada - UNESCO World Heritage Sites This 2011 Spanish €2 commemorative coin honors the Alhambra, the Generalife and the Albaicín in Granada and forms part of Spain’s annual series celebrating the country’s UNESCO World Heritage sites; the FNMT records it as the fifth issue of the €2 series. The design in the inner field depicts the Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones), the Alhambra’s emblematic courtyard with its central fountain and surrounding columns. UNESCO describes the Alhambra as a preserved Islamic palace-city and an outstanding example of Nasrid architecture and decorative arts. The complex bears witness to Muslim Spain from the 13th to the 15th centuries; the Generalife was the emirs’ rural residence built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The site was inscribed in 1984 and later extended.
