2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2013 A new Pope is coming 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2013 – Sedis Vacant MMXIII commemorates the interregnum of 2013, the period during which the papal office was temporarily vacant. The event followed Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement on 11 February that he would resign, a decision that took effect on 28 February. The conclave opened on 12 March, and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis the next day. The coin therefore records a brief but highly significant transition in the modern history of the Catholic Church. Its central design combines the coat of arms of Camerlengo Tarcisio Bertone with the canopy of the Apostolic Chamber and the crossed keys. The inscription “SEDE VACANTE MMXIII” identifies the extraordinary constitutional state represented.
