Established by Pope John Paul II in 1986, World Youth Day had developed into an international meeting that brought young believers together for prayer, celebration, and reflection. The Rio event was particularly associated with Pope Francis, who presided over its concluding liturgy during the first year of his pontificate. Its guiding biblical message called on Christians to make disciples of all nations. The coin’s central image places the Cristo Redentor statue above the city of Rio, while a group of cheering young people fills the foreground. The surrounding inscription identifies the event, its location, and 2013.
