2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2006 5th Centenary of the Swiss Pontifical Guard 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2006 500th Anniversary of the Swiss Guard commemorates five centuries of service to the popes by Swiss soldiers. The institution traces its beginnings to 22 January 1506, when 150 men from Switzerland, led by Kaspar von Silenen of Uri, reached Rome. After passing through the Porta del Popolo, they entered the Vatican and were received and blessed by Pope Julius II. This arrival established a military tradition that has continued across changing periods of papal history. Issued in 2006, the coin looks back to that event at the start of the sixteenth century. Its central design presents a Swiss Guard member taking the oath, with the raised standard providing a distinctive visual symbol. The dates 1506 and 2006 mark the foundation and its five-hundred-year commemoration.
