2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2007 80th birthday of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2007 – 80th Birthday of Pope Benedict XVI commemorates the milestone birthday of the pontiff born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Marktl am Inn on 16 April 1927. The Vatican State issued the coin on that same date, linking the release directly to the anniversary. Its historical setting was the early period of Benedict’s pontificate: Cardinal Ratzinger had been elected the 265th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on 19 April 2005 and had chosen the name Benedict XVI. A sharply rendered portrait of the pope dominates the inner disc and gives the design a personal focus. Around it, the inscription identifies Benedict XVI, records his eightieth year, and names Vatican City, while the year and artist marks complete the composition.
