2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2016 200th Anniversary of the Vatican Guard 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2016 – 200th Anniversary of the Vatican Gendarmerie commemorates the foundation of the corps in 1816. Pope Pius VII established the institution during the restoration of the Papal States, in the political aftermath of the Congress of Vienna and the collapse of Napoleonic rule. From its early history onward, the Gendarmerie was associated with maintaining public order, protecting people and places, and carrying out police investigations. The bicentenary was marked in 2016 and received a prominent religious commemoration when Pope Francis celebrated Mass in St Peter’s Basilica in September. The coin’s central design places a Vatican gendarme beside the dome of St Peter’s. The inscription and dates 1816–2016 clearly link the force’s origins with its two-century anniversary.
