According to Christian tradition, both were executed in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. The anniversary points to the traditional date of their martyrdom, AD 67, while 29 June has long served as their shared feast day. Tradition places Peter’s crucifixion on the Vatican Hill and Paul’s beheading along the Via Ostiense. The coin brings the two figures together in a single composition and identifies them through their customary symbols: Peter is shown with two keys, whereas Paul is associated with a sword. An Italian inscription around the design states the commemorative purpose and names Vatican City.
