2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2018 50th Anniversary of the death of Padre Pio 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2018 – 50th Anniversary of the Death of Padre Pio honors Francesco Forgione, the Italian Capuchin friar and priest widely known as Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Issued on 4 October 2018, the coin marked fifty years since his death on 23 September 1968. From 1916 onward, he served at the Capuchin monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo, where pastoral ministry, confession, and the Eucharist shaped his work. His legacy also includes Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital founded in 1956 to assist the sick. Pope John Paul II canonized him in 2002. The design presents Padre Pio in a frontal portrait, accompanied by the years 1968 and 2018, while twelve stars complete the outer ring.
