After decades of formation and pastoral work, he was elected pope on 16 October 1978 and adopted the name John Paul II. His pontificate lasted until his death on 2 April 2005 and left a lasting mark on the Catholic Church. The coin was issued in 2020, a century after his birth and six years after his canonization, placing the remembrance within the continuing public memory of his life and service. The design shows him alongside his childhood home and Wadowice Basilica. An eight-pointed star symbolizes Mary, while a laurel branch suggests sanctity and victory.
