2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2021 450th Anniversary of the birth of Caravaggio 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2021 | 450th Birthday of Caravaggio commemorates Michelangelo Merisi, the Italian painter better known as Caravaggio. Born in 1571 and deceased in 1610, he transformed painting around the turn of the seventeenth century through forceful realism, intense contrasts of light and shadow, and figures drawn from ordinary human experience. The coin presents a detail from his early Roman period: Fanciullo con canestro di frutta, or Boy with a Basket of Fruit. Created around 1595, the canvas shows a young man in three-quarter view holding a basket filled with leaves and autumn produce. The celebrated painting is housed in Rome’s Galleria Borghese. The inscription CARAVAGGIO and the dates 1571–2021 identify both the artist and the anniversary being remembered.
