It commemorated two thousand years since the birth of the Apostle Paul, a central figure in the first generation of Christian preaching and one of the faith’s most influential missionaries. The coin focuses on the dramatic turning point traditionally associated with his journey to Damascus. Paul is shown struck by a heavenly light and falling from a rearing horse, an image that recalls his encounter with the risen Christ and the transformation that followed. Issued in October 2008, the design places this scene at the center of the Vatican’s commemorative message, while twelve stars form the surrounding European coin ring.
