Issued 150 years after his death, the coin recognizes an author whose work became central to Italy’s literary culture. Manzoni is especially associated with the historical novel I promessi sposi, a landmark that also supported the development of a shared Italian literary language. The design places his portrait beside a quill and the opening words of the novel. Their reference to Lake Como evokes the story’s setting and gives the image a distinctly literary character. His name and the dates 1873–2023 complete the historical tribute.
