The observance opened on 19 June 2009, the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and concluded on the same feast in 2010. Its historical focus was the 150th anniversary of the death of Jean-Marie Vianney, the holy parish priest of Ars, who became a patron of parish priests. The coin translates the idea of pastoral service into a striking image: a shepherd reaches toward a sheep threatened by a lion. This compact scene suggests vigilance, protection, and dedication to others. The inscription identifying the Vatican and the year, together with the twelve stars of the outer ring, completes the commemorative design.
