2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens Issued in 2004, Greece’s €2 commemorative coin honours the Olympic Games held in Athens, the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. Its design depicts the ancient Discobolus poised to throw the discus, linking the sporting ideals of classical Greece with the modern Olympic movement. Athens had hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, so the return of the event to its birthplace gave the 2004 edition distinctive historical resonance. The design also carries the “ATHENS 2004” logo and the five Olympic rings. Beyond its sporting theme, the coin occupies a special place in euro history: Greece issued the first €2 commemorative coin of its kind.
